Building a state-of-the-art Hospital for Children in a part of the world where there is none.

A message from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Meeting the Healthcare Needs of Africa’s Children

We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3), charitable organization whose mission is to address the deficiencies and challenges in meeting the healthcare needs of Africa’s children.  Currently, our flagship project is the construction of Central Africa’s first and only full-service children’s hospital in Cameroon.

Why a Children’s Hospital

“Children are not just small adults.”  They are physiological, psychological, and developmentally unique and different from adults.  This understanding led to the birth of dedicated children’s hospitals in Europe in the nineteenth century, a concept which has since flourished in many parts of the world, but not in Africa.

Why Children’s Hospital in Africa

In all of Africa there are only four dedicated, full-service children’s hospitals.  A vast majority of sick children are cared for at adult general hospitals, which are not only lacking in pediatric equipment but also personnel with  appropriate training in pediatric care.  This accounts for the high mortality of hospitalized children in Africa.   The need for more dedicated children’s hospitals in Africa cannot be overstated.

Children’s Hospital Mission

We envision a state-of-the-art hospital that is cost-effective, multidisciplinary and sustainable, that will provide comprehensive care to all children irrespective of socioeconomic status and will be a model for the rest of Africa.

“A specialist dedicated children’s hospital will be a credible demonstration of the commitment of African leaders to place the rights of children at the forefront – nothing less would be enough… This is not a luxury but a vital necessity that can no longer be delayed.”

-Nelson Mandela
